SAP Joule: Does SAP AI make training unnecessary?

With SAP Joule, AI is moving into SAP. But as powerful as the assistant is, it “lives” from the expertise of its users. People and training will continue to play an important role.
With SAP Joule, the SAP universe is getting its own AI assistant. Many companies have high expectations for the arrival of their own artificial intelligence. They hope for less effort, faster analyses and automated processes.
And training courses? Are they becoming superfluous?
The clear answer is no. SAP Joule is fundamentally changing the way we work with SAP – but AI does not replace knowledge. If you want to exploit the potential of the new AI assistant, you still need trained employees who understand what Joule does and why it does it.
And that in turn requires targeted skills transfer.
What is SAP Joule anyway?
SAP Joule is the new AI assistant from SAP. SAP itself describes it as a “co-pilot”. Joule uses generative AI to enable SAP users to communicate with SAP systems and retrieve information using natural language.
Instead of navigating through transaction codes or complex screens, users can simply ask:
“Show me the sales development of the last three quarters in the DACH region.”
Joule then accesses the existing SAP data, prepares it in an understandable way and, if desired, provides the appropriate infographic at the same time.
Joule is part of the SAP Business AI strategy and is integrated into SAP applications such as SAP S/4HANA and SuccessFactors. The focus is on productivity, automation and decision support. In contrast to open language models such as ChatGPT , Joule is domain-specific: it uses company data within the SAP ecosystem and is therefore secure, data protection-compliant and contextual.
The central functions of SAP Joule are
- Natural language and chat interaction with SAP systems Users can communicate with SAP in natural language and receive answers to their questions without having to perform complex navigation or technical queries.
- Analysis of SAP data using AI Joule automatically analyzes existing company data, creates reports and provides clear evaluations.
- Support for workflows and processes The AI assistant recognizes recurring processes and helps to execute operational processes faster and more efficiently.
- Contextual responses to business data Joule understands the role of the user, knows the systems and business processes and accesses the relevant data in real time.
Optionally expandable
- Custom Joule agents via SAP Build SAP Build enables companies to create their own Joule agents that are optimally adapted to their business processes.
- AI-supported automation Joule uses intelligent AI agents to automate complex workflows, recognize patterns and further accelerate operational processes.
- Real-time context intelligence Joule evaluates situations dynamically and provides answers based on current data.
Restrictions
- Cloud dependency Full access to Joule is currently only available for customers with SAP cloud solutions.
- Licensing costs The licensing model is based on the use of “tokens”, which can make cost calculation more difficult for companies with many individual developments.
What does SAP Joule mean for companies?
The AI copilot offers clear advantages for companies that integrate Joule into their SAP applications:
- Efficiency gains through AI-supported automation: The ability to interact with complex systems in natural language increases productivity.
- Faster evaluations and better decisions: Users can create analyses and reports in seconds. This allows them to make decisions faster and processes are accelerated.
- Relief in operational processes: Routine activities are eliminated, allowing employees to concentrate more on creative tasks or value creation.
Despite the considerable potential of SAP Joule, there are also clear limits to its practical use:
- Dependence on data quality: the available information remains the decisive success factor. Joule is only as good as the data it works with.
- Technical and process knowledge: Joule provides support, but human understanding is still necessary to interpret the results correctly.
- Governance, data protection and transparency: these must be clearly regulated, as they are the basis for trust in AI results.
Our interim conclusion: Joule can do a lot, but is no substitute for expertise.
“The more convenient and natural access to SAP data becomes through AI, the greater the risk that people will no longer critically examine the underlying data. This is precisely why training remains so important: only well-prepared teams can ensure data quality – and thus the basis for reliable AI results.” – Christian Gronwoski, SAP trainer
Why training remains indispensable with SAP Joule
The introduction of SAP Joule is changing the way people work with software. Instead of executing transactions, users enter into a dialog with the system. This makes SAP much more of a dialog partner that needs to be understood and managed.
This dialog needs to be learned. This is because SAP Joule increases the risk of employees relying even more heavily on AI-generated answers – without critically checking the underlying postings, master data or process steps. AI often formulates results very convincingly, even if the database is incorrect.
This significantly increases the responsibility for clean data. Only when processes are understood and employees are well prepared for their specific roles can the database be created on which Joule can deliver reliable recommendations and reports. AI can only optimize what is technically correct in the system – data sovereignty therefore remains a central human task.
This is why training is becoming even more important, because only those who understand the processes can evaluate AI results, recognize errors and build trust. This requires new skills:
- Prompt Literacy: How do I formulate precise questions to the AI to get meaningful answers?
- Data literacy: How do I critically evaluate results?
- Understanding AI: Where are the limits of automated recommendations?
Conclusion: AI needs smart people, not blind users.
Training courses are not becoming superfluous, but are evolving: towards skills-oriented learning in the age of AI.
How ML Gruppe supports companies with SAP Joule
SAP Joule opens up new opportunities for companies that are already using SAP productively or are currently migrating. At the same time, the dialog-oriented exchange also requires new approaches from employees.
In order to fully utilize the potential of SAP Joule, employees need to understand SAP processes and be able to handle AI-supported answers with confidence.
Without targeted skills development, Joule’s potential will not be realized.
And this is exactly where ML Gruppe comes in – with an approach that strategically combines SAP expertise, AI competence and change management and is geared towards the reality in companies.
This is how ML Gruppe supports your employees in using SAP Joule correctly:
1. secure SAP basics – before Joule arrives
Our SAP training courses create a solid foundation so that your employees understand the system whose database Joule uses.
2. build up AI competence in the SAP context
We use combined training concepts to teach your employees how to work with the system in a practical way.
- Prompting in the SAP context
- Critical evaluation of AI results
- Understanding of data quality and system logic
- Responsible use of automated recommendations
- The result: true SAP Business AI Literacy.
3. practical workshops directly in the system
We develop programs that are tailored to your company and your specific needs (e.g. purchasing, finance, production, HR, logistics, management, etc.). Your employees experience the live SAP system
- how to trigger reports and analyses with Joule
- how they prepare and validate decisions
- how they optimize workflows via AI
- how to recognize and avoid mistakes.
This makes Joule a tangible experience.
4. change support for sustainable acceptance
New technologies need orientation in order to be accepted. We provide support through:
- Management briefings
- Clear communication
- Target group activation
- Sound change management.
With us, SAP Joule becomes a strategic success factor.
Conclusion: What SAP Joule means for SAP training
SAP Joule is a milestone in the SAP world. The system’s internal AI is a valuable and intelligent helper that makes work much easier. But what it is not: SAP Joule does not replace specialist knowledge.
SAP Joule is only as strong as the people who use it
The decisive factor for the future viability of companies is and remains people.
Companies that invest now in further training and digital skills for their employees will secure a decisive advantage.
With us, the introduction of SAP Joule is not an AI experiment, but a successful step into the future.
SAP expertise for your company
We support you in strategically introducing SAP Joule, empowering your teams and leveraging the potential of Business AI.
